Firefighter Applicants

Following successful completion of appropriate training, firefighters are classified as either:

  • Interior: Perform firefighting duties inside and outside burning structures where the use of SCBA-Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus is required
  • Exterior: Fight fires outside of structures only [grass, rubbish, dumpster, vehicle, etc.] where the use of SCBA-Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus may be required
  • Support: Members who perform services at an incident scene where the use of SCBA-Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus is not required

Steps to Becoming a Volunteer Firefighter

APPLICANTS:

  • Applicants must be age 18 or older and of sound body and mind to apply
  • Complete our online inquiry form and a fire department representative will follow up with you to discuss expectations and step you through our recruitment process
  • Applicants must complete and submit Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background and Child Abuse Check forms, and a Fire Department application. Links to the appropriate forms and instructions will be forwarded to you upon submission of our online inquiry form. There are no costs for the completion of the background checks. There is a $10 application fee payable to the fire company.
  • Applicants with previous emergency services experience should include a letter(s) from their former supervisor with their application

CANDIDATES:

Upon receipt of all required forms by the fire company, our officers will:

  • Review the application
  • Schedule and conduct a tour with the candidate for membership
  • Schedule and conduct an in-person interview with the candidate for membership
  • Candidates must be appointed to membership by a 2/3 majority vote of the fire company membership present at a regular meeting, contingent upon:
    • Accurate completion of all required forms
    • Positive outcomes from the interview
    • Positive outcomes from all background checks

RECRUITS:

Following appointment by the fire company, the new member will be introduced and invited to sign the membership book of the corporation
Upon acceptance into membership, the new recruit will be:

  • Fitted for PPE-Personal Protective Gear (Turnout Gear)
  • Provided with a copy of the department’s SOGs-Standard Operating Guidelines
  • Provided with a Probationary Member Task Book
  • Scheduled for apparatus, equipment and procedural familiarization
  • Signed-off as a riding observer by a senior firefighter or fire officer
  • Allowed to participate in emergency activities commensurate with the level of their training and under the direct supervision of a higher trained and more experienced firefighter or fire officer
  • Eligible to start Pennsylvania State Firefighter 1 or other appropriate training upon recommendation of a chief or training officer
  • Designated as a Probationary Member for a minimum of six (6) months

EXPECTATIONS:
Probationary Members are expected to complete the following participation benchmarks during their initial six (6) month period:

  • Participate in six (6) monthly fire company meetings, or:
  • Respond to 2% of all EMS calls as a volunteer, or:
  • Respond to 10% of all Fire calls, or:
  • Participate in 25% of all Crew Nights and Activities
