Cadet or Junior Firefighter/Trainee Applicants

Our Cadet and Junior Firefighter/Trainee Youth Program offers young people 14-17 the opportunity to grow in public service. Through classroom and hands-on instruction and activities, and mentoring from senior firefighters and company leaders, these young adults will learn about the volunteer fire service, community service and the values of trust, respect, loyalty, dedication and selfless service to others. Most importantly, they’ll learn about themselves and their capabilities, allowing them to explore their full potential for a career or vocation in fire and emergency services.

Steps to becoming a Cadet or Junior Firefighter/Trainee

We encourage all prospective members to review the information on this page before submitting an application to help you decide if this is the right opportunity for you. When you are ready to move forward, please complete our online recruitment inquiry form to get started.

Following successful completion of appropriate training, firefighters are classified as either:

  • Cadet Firefighters: 14-15 years old
  • Junior Firefighter/Trainee: 16-17 years old

APPLICANTS:

  • Cadet Member Applicants must be age 14-15 and of sound body and mind to apply
  • Application MUST be signed by Parent/Guardian
  • Junior Firefighter/Trainee Applicants must be age 16-17 and of sound body and mind to apply
  • Complete our online inquiry form and a fire department representative will follow up with you to discuss expectations and step you through our recruitment process
  • Applicants must complete and submit Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background and Child Abuse Check forms, and a Fire Department application. Links to the appropriate forms and instructions will be forwarded to you upon submission of our online inquiry form. There are no costs for the completion of the background checks. There is a $10 application fee payable to the fire company.
  • Applicants must obtain and submit Pennsylvania Employment Certificate (a.k.a. – Worker’s Permit or Working Papers) with their application

CANDIDATES:

Upon receipt of all required forms by the fire company, our officers will:

  • Review the application
  • Schedule and conduct a tour with the candidate for membership
  • Schedule and conduct an in-person interview with the candidate for membership
  • Candidates must be appointed to membership by a 2/3 majority vote of the fire company membership present at a regular meeting, contingent upon:
    • Accurate completion of all required forms
    • Positive outcomes from the interview
    • Positive outcomes from all background checks

CADET FIREFIGHTER RECRUITS:

Following appointment by the fire company, the new member will be introduced and invited to sign the membership book of the corporation
Upon acceptance into membership, the new recruit will be:

  • Provided appropriate PPE-Personal Protective Gear (Turnout Gear)
  • Provided with a copy of the department’s SOGs-Standard Operating Guidelines
  • Provided with a Probationary Member Task Book
  • Eligible to start Pennsylvania State Firefighter 1 or other appropriate training upon recommendation of a chief or training officer

JUNIOR FIREFIGHTER/TRAINEE RECRUITS:

Following appointment by the fire company, the new member will be introduced and invited to sign the membership book of the corporation
Upon acceptance into membership, the new recruit will be:

  • Provided appropriate PPE-Personal Protective Gear (Turnout Gear)
  • Provided with a copy of the department’s SOGs-Standard Operating Guidelines
  • Provided with a Probationary Member Task Book

EXPECTATIONS:
Cadet/Junior Firefighter/Trainee Firefighters are expected to:

  • Maintain at least a C average in school
  • Attend at least 50% of all company meetings and training events
